Bridgework underway on Aspetuk Ridge Road

Local traffic is asked to use alternate routes, while through traffic is asked to follow detour signs.
All properties will be accessible at all times during the construction.

Depot Square plan needs financial assistance

BRISTOL — Depot Square may be ready to move forward, but not without some sort of government subsidy.
Long Island-based Renaissance Downtowns is working with a Hartford real estate developer and D’Amato Construction Co. of Bristol to come up with a firm plan by mid-April. Whether it will all work out, though, remains up in the air. “I think it’s possible, but it’s not an easy deal,” Ed D’Amato Jr. said Wednesday. “I believe it can be done or we wouldn’t be working at it. At the end of the day, the numbers will tell the tale.” A March 20 letter from Martin Kenny of Lexington Partners said his firm “has joined with forces with the principals” of D’Amato “to work with Renaissance Downtowns to explore a financially viable way to jump start the first phase of development at Depot Square.” CLICK TITLE TO CONTINUE

Cooke Street rebuild eyed

PLAINVILLE — The town will hold an informational meeting later this month on a $1.2 million proposal to reconstruct a portion of Cooke Street from New Britain Avenue (Route 372) to the Farmington line.
The project is in its semifinal design stage. The construction plans will be presented to the Plainville Town Council.  A public information session is set for April 15, at 7 p.m., in the Municipal Center, as the town looks to get public input on the roadwork. The town wants to mill the existing surface of Cooke Street to a depth of 5 inches, stretching approximately 5,500 linear feet, to install new pavement surfacing. Other plans include the repair of a failed sewer trench, installation of pedestrian lamps and new pavement
markings. CLICK TITLE TO CONTINUE

Trees of Honor Memorial ground breaking April 17

MIDDLETOWN — Work to build a permanent memorial to the 65 Connecticut soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 will begin with a groundbreaking ceremony April 17. The Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial will be the centerpiece of a major overhaul of Veterans Memorial Park. The memorial was announced in June 2012, and will include a flowering tree and a plaque for each soldier around a central pond.
Construction work would start in May after site preparation work is completed, with an unveiling ceremony once the first phase of the project is done at the end of the summer, said Sue Martucci, the president of the memorial committee. Much of the project will be completed with donated labor and materials. Many veterans organizations, community groups and individuals have also made significant donations. CLICK TITLE TO CONTINUE
